analysis of the opening 15 minutes of limitless

The title sequence starts off silent , with a build up of non digetic music until the production logo of ralativity media is on screen , the shot has a black background with the blue writing of relativity media , the same also happens in the next shot for virgin productions. Then the names are shown again , along with other names of companies that have worked on the film , and the names of the actors. The names come on screen in time with a gunshot sound , this is used to draw attention to the names. The black background with white writing is very simplistic and is used to draw attention to the words.

The shot then cuts to a medium shot of a silver door , that is been hamered on , the shot then changes to a close up of the door , this is to highlight the importance of what is happening to and behind the door. The shot then changes to a long panning tracking establishing shot of the room in which the door is in  highlighing the boxes , and to show someome is on the move from this room.

The scene then changes to the celestial office building , where the same type of shots from the previous scene( panning tracking establishing shot) is used , however they use close ups here of crashed computers with the word error on  , and the showings of dead bodies to suggest trouble.

The shot then backs out of the office , and switches to a crane shot that goes up the front of the high rise building , to a long shot of eddie morra on the roof , they do this to show how high the building is , and they also represent eddie as small in comparison to suggest he is in a weakv position.

They then change to a medium shot of eddies face , they higlight his fearless emotion here to show he is,t scared of the situation he is in.

It then changes to a birds eye view over the head of eddie , to again show how high up he is .

The next shot is a close up of his foot hanging off the edge , suggesting he may jump.

There is then a loud bang , and a jump cut to eddies face and a fast pan to a window , where a guy get thrown into a wall. The shot the reverts to the close up of eddies face and he looks over his shoulder , and to the door seen in the first shot , this is to tell us the people banging on the door are after him.

The shot the goes to the crane shot , and it zooms down the building , and closes in on a taxi window , the camera then zooms through the city and through various windows and through the streets of new york as the title sequence is finished , however an important shot here is the one of the brain scan , as this suggests elements to the story , which is unknown at this point.

The shot is then descends on new york again , a long establishing shot which then cuts to a medium on eddie , there is also a close up of him smoking , to suggest a lower class of the character.

The shot changes to a bar , where the 180 rule is followed as he has a conversation in a bar

The scene then changes to him working on his laptom , the shot goes close up to the laptop, to reveal how little work he is doing , and changes to random shot of him seemingly wasting his time , watching tv , playing basketball ..

It then goes to him drinking in a bar.

Then it cuts to another conversation that obeys the 180 degree rule , it draws attention to leys been handed back to eddie , to represent that the girl (who was his girlfriend) is breaking up with him.

In a flashback during this scene , which is a quick transition , it shows a girls face on two ocacsions one on the wedding day filled with happy emotions , and the other with a sad looking emotion , and then a cut to a taxi driving away , symboling again she has left.

It then changes to a shot of him walking through the streets with his head down , walking into the odd person , suggesting he is upset and lost in thought , then he bumps into his ex brother in law , the difference in class is shown here by costume (eddie dressed like a bum , with his ex brother dressed dapper and cool) the 180 degree is matched here , and also in the next scene in a bar .there’s a close up of the pill here , to show the importance of it.

Shots then revert to the one of him walking through new york , and having the flashbacks about his old wife and old boss again , and the shot the stops and goes to a low angle shot of him getting his keys out , he also takes out the pill and takes it , teh shot changes to an xray of the pill been swallowed , this it to show the importance of it.

As he walks up the stairs , another 180 degree rule is established , with close ups of the girls mouth , to highlight she is nagging and constantly talking , the shot then changes colour , this is to symbolise a change in eddies state , and that the pill has taken effect.

After some shots of the human body , to symobloise the pill working , the shot returns to the 180 degree rule , however this time with a bigger focus on light , to show a new dawnand a brighter outlook on eddies life. The camera then pas back away from teh girl , to signify eddies distance from her , and his growing distance in all aspects from her , the 180 degree rule is again establised , however with eddie a lot closer to her now , to show he feels more comfortable around her , and a better realtionship than the nagging old one has been established,

The target audience for our film is generally teenagers and mostly males, who this film would appeal to as they could identify and empathise with the main character. We found that this was an audience that sci-fi films would appeal to and made our film around that. I wanted the film to appeal mostly to the group of teenagers which are not socially active, and prefer to be isolated at times, which is why the main character acts like he does. He is like me, but with a sense of purpose, a responsibility that some people have too. After the draft of the storyline was done, I created a questionnaire about it and asked others about their thoughts, and was told it was good, but I used some advice from the results form and altered the story to incorporate a friend/possible love interest: Samantha. From there I made the film showing the teenager as the good guy and the government as bad, which is the genarel idea that teens have, so this helps them identify. When the film is cut off after two minutes, there is not a lot of room for plot development, so I could not incorporate a lot of suggestions into the actual film, but may have if the film were to continue.

Evaluation 5

I made the film trying to make it appeal to a teenage male audience, and it has come out favouring towards that target audience. However, when I put out the online questionnaire asking for feedback, I put it on Facebook, where it was reviewed by my family, who are mostly females over 30 years old. The results that came back showed a trend, where males understood the storyline of the film better than females, which was expected. Most people said it would be of the Sci-fi/Thriller genre and most people thought that the music fit the film well. A few people made several suggestions for the film to continue into involving aliens and plot twists. It was said that the film was similar to I, robot, which I can sort of see why. All of the reviews were positive, but I do not think I was effective in pushing the film to the target audience, nor pulling them to it because I did not advertise very well to people of the correct group. If I could do it again I would try to put my film "out there" as much as possible rather than the limited audience it has now.

Our film would be distributed by a mainstream company, and most likely one who did a similar film like 20th Century Fox (who did Jumper)

or Warner Brothers who did Inception.

If it was to be an independent film, it could still be done well by a company such as Endgame entertainment who were responsible for the fairly recent film Looper.

All of these films made by these companies are similar to our film and I am not sure which would produce/distribute it. I think some of the special effects that would be able to be used would merit a mainstream company, most likely Warner Bros, as they have a large budget and a reputation for using it, as seen with the mind-bending cgi of Inception, rather than the cheaper, but still effective time travel effect of looper: people appear/dissapear instantly. Actually, I did this in my film, so it may be ok to keep a lower budget with the same effect. Personally, I would choose a company that would not force big names into the cast, I would prefer to give new people a chance, as well as allowing someone new to represent a social group of teens that doesn't get represented very often.

Evaluation 2

In our film we stuck to many stereotypes of social groups, by having a male antagonist, male protagonist and a female who is portrayed as helpless (or at least to begin with). Age however, we differ from them a little, where teenagers would normally be socially connected, Stan is made to seem isolated and alone in the world.
A lot is said about Spyke's character when you notice that he only has one word of diagetic dialogue in the entire film.

Also the agent tracking them down does not seem that old either, he would in the further film be shown as a rookie in the agency he works for. And why is this secret agency tracking down and interrogating teens? This is a question we purposefully want the audience to ask themselves to makes them feel that something is “off” and that the agency are the bad guys. We have tried to make it so that it is obvious who has the most power here, and have done this by always using low angled shots on Stan, except for when he is weakened and collapses to the floor. The camera is always higher than Samantha, as she has the least power in these situations. We have tried to keep the camera as even as possible when filming Commander Richards, with a few low angle shots to show his dominance over Sam. A good way we have distinguished the two powers of the film is this stairwell shot from the title sequence,

where the actor names for both characters are shown here, with the actor for Stan in the light and Commander Richards’ actor in the shadows, showing who is good and evil. In editing I tried to make the link between Sam and Spyke as obvious as possible with white flashes and reactions to show Spyke's powers.

changes we had to make to the filming

the main change we had to make to our film was the script and dialouge , as we felt the dialouge was too short and didn't explain the story well enough so we developed the idea and created a voiceover narrative .

another thing we had to change was what we actually filmed for the opening two minutes , as we found we didn't have enough footage for the opening two minutes , so we had to create more.

we also had to film some shots again , due to continuity errors such as change of hair and clothing , we also filmed one scene again as the shot was wrong , and you couldn't see the characters face .

Evaluation 1

In our film we have tried to stick to the codes and conventions of the sci-fi genre without going over-the-top. We filmed scenes that would look normal but use them in a way as to make them seem more unreal; such as white flashes and red/green filters.

The camera focuses on three characters:  Stan the protagonist (Played by me), Commander Richards, the bad guy in a suit, and Samantha an innocent looking girl whose significance is not yet revealed in the opening 2 minutes.

The film starts with a shot of Stan looking out across the city from a high window.

This is often seen in superhero movies with the hero shown to be watching over their city. The scene cross –cuts between this and Commander Richards running down a corridor, seemingly towards our protagonist.
As tension builds up there is also a voiceover from Stan explaining about powers. This is done in many sci-fi films to explain certain in-universe points to the audience that may not be obvious from the beginning, an example is the beginning of the film Looper. The tension and pace of the shots increases up to the point where Stan sees Richards take Samantha in his mind. (This is the green/red shot at the top of the post). Then there is a fade to black and a significantly calmer title sequence follows. After this however we see that Stan’s visions of Samantha in trouble are continuing and having more of a physical effect on him. The 2 minute film ends with him opening his eyes after seeing Richards interrogation her. This sudden shot adds suspense and mystery as to what events will follow this occurrence.

Voiceover

There are two types of people in this world, those who have power, and those who don't. -People think power can be granted by money, government, or others in power-. But true power  is natural.- In the genetic coding -of the human species there is a gene that limits this power.- But there are... Exceptions. Exceptions that grant some people power. Super-powers as it were. -They come in many forms to a select few. And one of them-, is Me.

Evaluation 1
The brief was to film a conversation between two people, using match on action, 180degree line, shot reverse shot.
We researched by looking at different conversations in films that included 180degree rule, match on action and shot reverse shot.
To plan we planed by writing a storyboard, filled out a location RECEE to see if we could film there and filled out a risk assessment and worked out where we wanted to film. We also wrote a script and a storyboard to refer to while filming.
We covered the conversation from 3 different angles with a HD tripod camera as well as shots of one of the actors walking up a corridor and towards the end the same actor would get up and walk out the door behind him.
We filmed in the TV studio (lower levels of the college) and used our own equipment to film the exercise.
When we had finished the filming we edited the film using final cut for the apple mac. We trimmed the footage down to what was necessary and edited in a title and group number at the beginning of the film and added a dissolve effect to the title sequence so it would slowly fade into the film.
The film satisfies the brief by including the 180degree line when the two actors are talking, match on action when one of the actors enters the room and shot reverse shot is displayed when the actors are talking at one point one actor is talking then when he has finished, it pans to the other actor then back to the first. The film incorporates these elements in most scenes.
