Possible story line.
A student of archaeology’s great grand farther dies at a dig
and his finds and journal are discovered and sent to the student. The journal
starts out to be a regular expedition log but then begins to mention strange
goings on around the camp as one by one the team begins to be murdered with no
evidence as to who did it the killing, but the one thing that is consistent is
an unusual depiction of the artefact cut into the skin of the corpse.
The journal then mentions a lengthy investigation of the
murders carried out by the great grandfather in secret after the expedition
leader deemed it as simply unfortunate and forbid any investigation. The great grandfather does this anyway and discovers
that the murders where being carried out in a hallucinogenic frenzy by one of
the team
